FAQs – Design and Production

What is appliqué used for?

Appliqué is a decorative technique where fabric pieces or patches are sewn or adhered to create a design or pattern. It involves layering one fabric on top of another and securing it in place through stitching, usually satin stich sewn all around the edges to form a neat edge.

Appliqué in garment embellishment offers the opportunity to add texture, dimension, and personalised designs to select garments. It allows for creativity and customisation, as different fabric choices and arrangements can result in unique and eye catching designs on the garment.

At One Sport, we offer appliqué on our hoodies and varsity jackets as these heavier weight fabrics are a great base for appliqué.

What is the best fabric for sports and activities?

When it comes to choosing the right fabric for your athletic needs, One Sport offers a wide range of options to suit various activities and preferences.

One popular fabric type is polyester, known for its durability and moisture-wicking properties. Polyester fabrics are ideal for high-intensity workouts and team sports that involve a lot of sweating, as they effectively draw moisture away from the body, keeping you dry and comfortable. Additionally, polyester is known for its quick-drying capabilities, making it a great choice for outdoor activities or long training sessions.

Another fabric option offered by One Sport is spandex, also known as elastane or Lycra. Spandex is highly stretchable and provides excellent flexibility, making it perfect for sports that require a wide range of motion, such as yoga, dance, or gymnastics. This fabric type offers a snug fit and helps to streamline your movements, ensuring maximum comfort and freedom during intense physical activities. Spandex is highly resistant to wear and tear, allowing you to enjoy its benefits for a long time without compromising its shape or performance.

Whether you’re looking for moisture-wicking polyester or flexible spandex, One Sport’s fabric range has got you covered for all your sporting needs.

Will the colours be exactly the same across different garments?

At One Sport, we strive to maintain consistent colour reproduction across different garments, but it’s important to note that there can be slight variations in colour across different fabrics.

Factors such as fabric composition, printing techniques, and even dye lots can contribute to slight differences in colour across different garments. Additionally, different fabric types may absorb and reflect colours differently, which can affect the perceived colour appearance.

To minimise colour variations, we use advanced colour management techniques and closely monitor our production processes. Our experienced team ensures that the colours are matched as closely as possible to the original artwork. However, we recommend ordering all garments for a particular design in a single order to minimise any potential colour discrepancies.

If colour consistency is critical for your project, we also offer the option of requesting a pre-production sample or a physical colour swatch for approval before proceeding with bulk production.

Our goal is to provide you with the best possible colour representation, and our customer support team is always available to address any concerns or questions you may have regarding colour consistency across different garments.

Is it more expensive to have more colours in my design?

At One Sport, we offer competitive pricing for our products and understand that cost is an important consideration for our customers.

Our sublimated printing services allow for vibrant and detailed designs on our products. When it comes to sublimated printing, the number of colours used does not affect the cost. Unlike traditional printing methods, sublimation allows for unlimited colours at no additional cost. This is because sublimation involves a dye transfer process where the design is infused into the fabric, resulting in a full-colour, seamless print.

With sublimated printing, you have the freedom to use as many colours as you desire in your design without incurring any extra charges. This makes it an ideal choice for complex and colourful artwork. Our team of experts will work closely with you to ensure the highest quality and accuracy in reproducing your design. If you have any specific design requirements or questions regarding sublimated printing, our customer support team is here to assist you and provide you with a detailed quote based on your design specifications.

We strive to keep our pricing fair and transparent. Our team will work closely with you to provide a detailed quote based on your specific design requirements. We aim to offer cost-effective solutions without compromising on the quality of the final product. Additionally, we offer bulk pricing options for larger orders, which can help offset the cost of your order.

If you have any budget constraints or specific pricing enquiries, we encourage you to reach out to our customer support team, who will be happy to assist you in finding the best solution that fits your needs.

Does it cost more to add many logos, names, or numbers to my sublimated design?

At One Sport, our sublimated printing process allows for the inclusion of multiple logos and other elements in your design at no additional cost.

Unlike traditional printing methods, sublimation allows for unlimited colours and designs, including multiple logos, without any extra charges. This means you can incorporate as many logos as you need to achieve your desired branding or sponsorship goals without incurring any additional fees.

We understand the importance of showcasing your brand or sponsor logos, and our team will work closely with you to ensure accurate placement and sizing of each logo within your sublimated design. To ensure the best quality and clarity, we recommend providing your logos in a high-resolution vector format, such as EPS or AI files. If vector files are not available, high-resolution raster files, such as PNG or TIFF, can also be used, as long as they meet our minimum resolution requirements. If you don’t have access to high res versions of your logos, don’t be discouraged – we may be able to redraw your low res logos for you to suit our artwork specifications.

Our goal is to provide you with a high-quality, fully customised product that meets your branding needs.

If you have any specific requirements or questions regarding adding multiple logos or other elements to your sublimated design, our customer support team is here to assist you and provide guidance throughout the process.

What is sublimation used for?

In the context of printing on fabric, sublimation refers to a specific printing method called sublimation printing or dye sublimation printing. It is a technique that uses heat to transfer dye onto fabrics – including our t-shirts and singlets and polo shirts – creating vibrant, long lasting, and high quality prints.

Sublimation printing involves three main components: special sublimation inks, transfer paper, and a heat press. First, the artwork is created or prepared by our in-house design team in consultation with you. The design is then printed onto a special transfer paper using sublimation inks. These inks are unique because they have the ability to convert from a solid to a gas state without going through the liquid phase. This conversion is known as sublimation.

The printed transfer paper is then placed face down on the fabric. The paper and fabric are then subjected to high heat and pressure using a heat press, causing the sublimation inks to turn into a gas, penetrating the fibres of the fabric and bonding them at a molecular level. After the sublimation process, the fabric is cooled down, solidifying the inks within the fibres of the fabric. The transfer paper is then removed, revealing the final printed design. The fabric pieces are then sewn into your completed garment.

Sublimation printing works best on fabrics with a high polyester content. Polyester fibres have a higher affinity for the sublimation inks, resulting in better colour transfer and vibrancy. It is possible to sublimate onto fabrics with a polyester blend, although the results may vary.

Dye sublimation results in vibrant and durable prints – resistant to fading or cracking as the colours are embedded into the fabric itself rather than sitting on the surface. Sublimation printing is excellent for full colour, photo quality prints with intricate details and gradients, and is commonly used at One Sport for customising our sportswear, school leavers polo shirts, team jerseys, t-shirts, and other apparel items.

What is embroidery used for?

Embroidery is used to recreate a logo or design onto fabric, turning your design into stitches by digitising and layering threads to produce an affordable, durable and custom finish that is perfect for personalising your team’s garments.

An embroidery machine is a specialised machine that automates the process of embroidery. It uses computer controlled mechanisms to stitch designs onto fabric, eliminating the need for manual stitching by hand.

Embroidery machines vary in complexity and features, but the basic principles remain the same. They combine computer control, motorised movement, precise needle positioning, and thread management to automate the embroidery process, resulting in faster and more accurate stitching compared to manual hand embroidery.

At One Sport, we most often use embroidery to recreate your logo onto sports, corporate or tradies wear. Embroidery has a clean and professional finish, and is a long lasting method of customisation.

What is screen printing used for?

Screen printing is a cost effective solution and is great for large and small artwork sizes. Screen printing is a versatile and highly durable choice, and can be added to a wide range of garments including t-shirts, bags, hats and other promotional products.

Screen printing machines, also known as silk screen printing machines, are used in many industries to apply ink onto various surfaces, including fabrics, paper, plastic, glass, and more. The process involves using a mesh screen with a stencil to transfer ink onto the desired material.

The first step in screen printing your design onto one of our various garments is having our in house design team prepare the design in consultation with you. The design is then printed or transferred onto a transparent film or a light sensitive emulsion coated screen. A mesh screen is then coated with a light sensitive emulsion and left to dry in a dark environment. The film with the design is placed on top of the screen and exposed to UV light. The light hardens the emulsion, except in the areas where the design blocks the light.

The prepared screen is mounted onto the screen printing machine, and adjustments are made to ensure proper alignment. The screen printing machine has a squeegee or a rubber blade attached to a moving arm. The arm is positioned above the screen, and ink is poured onto the screen at one end. The squeegee is then moved across the screen, applying pressure and forcing the ink through the open areas of the stencil onto the material below. The mesh of the screen allows the ink to pass through only in the desired areas, creating the design. This process is repeated for each colour or layer of the design. If multiple colors are involved, different screens with corresponding stencils are used, and the material is aligned accurately to ensure proper registration of the colors. The printed material then needs to be dried and cured. The curing process ensures that the ink adheres permanently to the material and becomes durable and resistant to washing or fading.

At One Sport, screen printing may be used for printing team names or individual names and numbers onto sports apparel, or company names onto promotional items, or tradies workwear. Screen printing is chosen due to its versatility, durability, and ability to create vibrant and opaque prints.

What is film transfer used for?

Vinyl or film transfer, also known as heat transfer vinyl (HTV), is a popular method for customising and printing designs on t-shirts, polo shirts, and other garments. It involves using a special type of vinyl material that is cut into the desired shape or design and then heat pressed onto the fabric.

The first step in vinyl transfer printing is having our in house design team create or prepare your design in consultation with you. The design is then sent to a vinyl cutter or plotter to precisely cut the design from the vinyl material. A heat press machine is used for the vinyl transfer process, using a sophisticated system to regulate temperature, pressure, and time to properly adhere the vinyl to the garment. The heat activates the vinyl’s adhesive causing it to bond with the fabric fibres.

Film transfer is an excellent choice for a professional and quality finish that is both durable and vibrant on almost any fabric type.

Vinyl transfer printing allows for precise, single colour designs and at One Sport vinyl transfer is used for customising t-shirts, polo shirts, sports apparel, and other garments. It provides a durable and long lasting print that is resistant to fading and cracking.
